Top 5 Breakfast & Brunch Places in Berlin

Breakfast Lovers & Foodies – WANTED!

Visiting Berlin is always a good idea to be honest.

This vibrant city full of art highlights, historic monuments and events throughout the year offers so much for the people visiting. This year I went to Berlin in May for the re:publica, a communication and digital conference in STATION Berlin. Days full of speeches, talks and keynotes were super interesting, but also made us really, really hungry.

So we decided to start our days in the best Brunch & Breakfast places in Berlin. We researched magazines, blogs and talked to our favorite foodies and tested the best recommendations for you guys. What we really loved about our brekkie experiences: Every place we visited was totally different, the food was extraordinary and we are super excited and happy to share our Brunch & Breakfast gems with you. So you better be prepared: 3,2,1, go!

1. Neumanns Café

Neumanns = Back to basics!

And we loved exploring this place as much as we enjoyed the food! Home made sourdough bread and fresh organic ingredients sound like paradise for you? I guess then that’s the place to go for you in Berlin. Simplicity is their concept when it comes to interior as well as their meals. In the best way! The breakfast menu offers vegetarian options as well as different combos for meat lovers – we tried the sourdough bread with green asparagus, topped with roasted almonds and poached egg. We also tried one of the combos they offer: coffee (you can choose how you want your coffee to be served, I had cappuccino with soy milk), fresh orange juice, mixed salad and sourdough bread with mashed potatoes, steamed spinach and also a poached egg. What a nice surprise this combination was – full of surprises for our tastebuds. The homemade granola also looked super delicious, we would have loved to taste it too but we were just too full after our breakfast choices.

But just to let you know: We saw it at the table next to us, served with deep frozen and fresh berries and looked amazing.

Simplicity? YES PLEASE!

Beetroot, goat cheese, caramelized walnuts, topinambur served on homemade sourdough bread – you think that sounds delicious? Yes, it totally is. They not only offer amazing breakfast meals, they also offer very creative lunch creations. Neumanns is the real proof that bread is everything but boring.

2. The Distrikt Coffee

Please wait to be seated!

First things first: We really loved our experience at the Distrikt Coffee in Berlin Mitte – but make sure you also bring plenty of time with you. Why? Because this place is, especially during breakfast and brunch time, one of the most crowded food hotspots in Berlin. And when I say be in a relaxed mood, I really mean it. We were lucky enough to show up there on a sunny day so waiting outside for 15-20 minutes was not that bad. You can’t book a table in advance so you better come early – especially on weekends. We arrived there, made it on the waiting list and after 20 minutes the waitress guided us to our table. The staff was, although the whole restaurant was crowded, still very friendly and obliging.

Egg-cellent food & interior!

The typical rustic but clean-shabby Berlin chic totally suited my personal taste. Besides the fact that this restaurant definitely would be named “cool”, the atmosphere still was very warm and welcoming. The bigger table for sharing are also a nice way to get in touch with your neighbors. The breakfast menu offers a well balanced variety of sweets and savory meals: Avo on toast served with poached eggs, cherry tomatoes and seeds, toasted brioche with berry preserves, creme fraiche and caramelized walnuts. For all health addicts, they also offer a superfood bowl with chia seeds, cocoa nibs and granola. For the sweet tooth, the granola with yoghurt, rhubarb and strawberries is definitely a highlight. And for all our vegan readers: They serve coffee with soy and almond milk and are really flexible when rearranging meals for vegans. Thumbs up! We are definitely coming back!

For our dessert lovers the “Sun of Panama” pancakes with banana, caramel sauce and whipped cream will make their hearts beat a little bit faster than normal. Scrambled tofu or grilled avocado squash for our vegan followers. YUM!

4. Du Bonheur

When the name is the motto …

“Du bonheur” means luck, joy, happiness – because time stands still for several minutes and you actually feel way more happy when you leave this place. The assortment of cakes, tartes and desserts was excellent, fresh, and really inviting. Brioche and country breads neatly displayed along a wonderful counter. We chose two pastries and ordered a cappuccino and an espresso. The coffee was definitely not our personal highlight, but the pastries were a total explosion of taste.

The only room is smallish and thus accommodates only few people. Yet, the interior is nice and cozy. If you are really hungry and looking for a huge breakfast – this is not the place to go. But if you fancy an espresso and a tiny pastry or just look for a perfect place to have a break – VOILA!
